We drove north into the Highlands today on our way to the Glencoe area. Along the way we stopped to look at some neolithic rock art at Achnabreac, Bronze Age standing stones at Nether Largie, a regional museum in Kilmartin and some graveslabs at a church next to the museum.
The purpose of the Nether Largie standing stones is unknown. However, it is thought there might be an astronomical purpose to them related to the positions of the sun and moon.
The Kilmartin Museum is in the Kilmartin Glen area. Nearby are many prehistoric sites and objects found there are on display. There are also other objects including crosses and graveslabs on display at the museum. Unlike grave stones, graveslabs were placed flat on the ground. We also visited a collection of graveslabs at a church next to the museum.
The rock art is considered to be about 4,000 years old. The area we visited was once along the sea shore. What the symbols in the rock art mean is unknown.
