Sunday, August 31

Today we went to Wasdale for a walk along Wast Water (the deepest lake in England).  Our trail crossed through woodlands, open country, farmhouses and fields.

After a traditional Sunday Roast at the local pub, we continued on to the ruins of Hardknott Roman Fort.  It was built during Hadrian's time in the 2nd century and known as Mediobogdum.  The Fort sits near the top of a mountain pass described as one of the most challenging roads in Britain. Getting to and from the Fort requires two-way, single-lane driving with hairpin turns and pullovers every now and then to allow cars coming from the other direction to pass.
