Today we took the bridge to the Isle of Skye. Just before the bridge we stopped to look down on the rebuilt 13th century Eilean Donan Castle. Once on Skye, we drove to Elgol on a single-track road.
We then ate lunch at the Broadford Hotel where legend has it Drambuie liqueur was invented. The story goes that Prince Charles Edward (aka Bonnie Prince Charlie, fleeing Scotland in 1746 for France after a failed uprising) gave a secret recipe for his personal liqueur to the MacKinnon Clan on the Isle of Skye as thanks for their support. The recipe is a blend of aged Scotch whisky, spices, herbs and honey. The owner of the hotel obtained the recipe, served it to guests, developed it commercially and the family trademarked it in 1893. Drambuie means "The Drink that Satisfies" in the local Gaelic language.
Afterwards, we planned to walk along the "Fairy Pools" path but the fairies were not welcoming - the place was very crowded and a heavy afternoon downpour started just before we arrived. So onward we went to Storr Lochs where we are staying for the next few days. Our cottage is just down the road from the Old Man of Storr rock formation.
