We were up early this morning to watch the sunrise on the trail to the viewpoint for the Old Man of Storr rock formation. It was a nice morning walk.
Afterwards, we went to visit Dunvegan Castle. For 800 years the Castle has been the home of the Chiefs of the Clan MacLeod (the 30th Chief is in residence). There were some interesting artifacts including a Fairy Flag that dates back to the Crusades of the Middle Ages and a boat shaped wooden mail box with a float that was tossed with messages enclosed into the ocean from an island owned by the Clan. It was hoped the messages would reach the shore and be delivered the Castle.
It is notable that during the Highland Potato Famine (1846 - 56), the Chief at the time made sure the MacLeods did not starve. He took a job in London and leased out the Castle to have enough income to take care of everyone.
