Today was another scenic drive day.  We went from Lochinver to Gairloch.  Along the way, we had some great views including the Summer Isles. 

Then we stopped at the Corrieshalloch Gorge National Heritage site for a walk that included a suspension bridge. We also learned about the mythical water-horse spirits that inhabit deep and flowing water.

Later, at the Inverewe Gardens National Trust site, we saw an artist's depiction of the water-horse spirit at an exhibit.

The Inverewe Gardens is at a point where the warmer waters of the Gulf Stream meet the Highlands, creating a unique microclimate.  The garden is the work of a father and daughter team.  They travelled the world to collect plants including trees.  A highlight is their walled garden.


There was bagpipe music to welcome us on arrival at the Gairloch Hotel where we are spending the night.  However, our day ended on a bit of a flat note (see below).  The rental cars come with no spare tire...  So, we are coordinating a replacement tire with the rental company for tomorrow.

The day started with a visit to the Dryburgh Abbey ruins - located right next door to our hotel. Founded in the twelfth century, not much remains of the Abbey.  It is best known as the burial place of Sir Walter Scott, a Scottish novelist, poet and historian. Next we visited the ruins of Jedburgh Abbey and took a walk around the town of Jedburgh visiting a few antique shops.  Jedburgh Abbey was also founded in the twelfth century and is considered one of the best preserved abbeys along the Scottish/English border.  Its Abbey Church remains intact.  The cemetery had a few interesting headstones and there was an exhibit about the stone masons who built the Abbey. We left Lewis on the morning ferry for Ullapool.  Then we took a scenic drive to Lochinver for the night.  Along the way we walked around the ruins of Ardvrek Castle and the Stoer Lighthouse. In Lochinver,  we saw a mobile cinema showing recent movies.

Our walk today was at Blea Tarn.   Afterwards we went for a boat ride in Coniston on the steam powered yatch Gondola. The Gondola was first launched in 1859 with a design inspired by a boat called a Burchiello as depicted in a painting by the Italian painter Canaletto. These boats were basically large wooden barges with elegantly furnished cabins used to carry wealthy passengers in Venice, Italy from the 16th to the 18th centuries. The Gondola operated until 1936 and was later converted into a houseboat in 1946. It was bought in the 1970s by the National Trust and completely rebuilt.
